Former shipping containers are the latest space solution for a new animated project at London’s iconic new Battersea Power Station development.
S Jones Containers provided two containers for the animated public space which forms part of the new pedestrian entrance in the first phase of the £9bn Battersea Power Station development.
The area, beneath Grosvenor Bridge, links Chelsea Bridge Wharf to Circus West and is the only pedestrian entrance to the site for the next three years.
Created by event interior design specialists Polar Bear Live, the 20m x 50m space includes a concierge desk/visitors’ information point, public toilets, six pop-up retail units and two event spaces, as well as storage space.
At present, the containers are being used to store marketing materials, but in the future they will house outdoor furniture used in the space around the bridge during summer months.
Simon Woodward, managing director of Polar Bear Live said: “Shipping containers are very well priced and easy to install. They were the perfect solution for our storage needs and now that we've painted them copper, they're an eye-catching addition to our scheme.
“Copper features quite heavily in our design palette and complements timber well, as there’s a lot of timber.”
Danielle Paul, sales account manager at S Jones, added: “It’s great that our containers feature as part of this spectacular redevelopment and is yet another creative use of containers that we can only wait for customers to create.”

S Jones Containers’ relationship with valued customer Uniflare goes back nearly 10 years to 2008. Over the years, we have delivered at least 13 projects for the global environmental technology company.
Our latest project was a bespoke containerised renewable energy system which has been shipped to Thailand.
The 40ft high cube container is being used to process methane waste gas from landfill sites and it houses three gas compressors and a control room.
The compressors will be used to compress bio gas 55% methane and 45% carbon dioxide, at the rate of 4500 cubic metres per hour, feeding a CHP (Combined Heat & Power) generator.
Les Newick at S Jones Containers, said: “Most of Uniflare’s projects have required modified plant room containers of 10ft and 20ft containers for use with gas processing equipment.
“The extent of the modification on the 40ft Thailand unit included; six sets of new cargo doors, 3in each sidewall, louvres and fan vents, together with an insulated internal lining designed specifically for high temperature and high humidity climates.”
Uniflare completes projects for UK, Europe and worldwide, and say they work with us because of our ability to deliver completely bespoke units using 3D CAD modelling expertise.
Trevor Beardsmore at Uniflare, said: “This complements our way of working as all Uniflare projects are a bespoke build to exacting customer requirements.”
Previous Uniflare projects include an equipment container enclosure in the desert sands of Saudi Arabia, demonstrating how Uniflare, in partnership with S Jones Containers, is able to deliver cost-effective solutions to the most remote locations.
Bespoke conversions are carried out by S Jones’ team of specialist design engineers to transform containers into highly sophisticated containerised solutions for equipment and processes worldwide – for test facilities, power generation, solar farm electrical enclosures, restaurant complexes, water pumps, fire suppression, housing, and a host of other applications.

We supply containers to a variety of business sectors for many different uses.
We recently delivered a 20ft open sided container to The West Midlands Fire Service. The container is being used to store operational equipment as there is a shortage of space at the station.
Our customer commented, “using the container provides a cost effective option rather than investing in building alterations. Should our training requirements change in the future, this also provides us with a transferable solution minimising future costs.”

Adams Bakery, trading as Heathrow Bakery, supplies baked goods for the airline and prepared meal industry, producing 2million rolls per week.
When they recently needed a bespoke boiler housing in a hurry to cope with expansion, they turned to us, the specialists in shipping container conversions and solutions.
We have supplied three modified containers as custom-made enclosures for a Babcock steam boiler and Heuft oil boilers.
Heathrow Bakery general manager David Taylor explained: “We were searching for someone who could provide a cost-effective bespoke enclosure in a very short time. We couldn’t put the boilers inside our current buildings and so custom-made enclosures were the answer to our problem.
“Steam from the Babcock boiler is required for the baking process in the proofer to raise the bread and in the oven to control the yeast and create shine on the crust.
“The other container enclosure is for the oil heaters which heat the ovens.”
We supplied two 40’ high cube shipping containers joined together to create a double-width clear-span enclosure, and one 20’ unit for the bespoke bakery boiler housings.
David Taylor said the shipping container conversion allowed their engineers to be more efficient in the maintenance of the equipment.
“From the moment we approached them, S Jones were superb from the inquiry through design to the final product delivered to site.
“The team provided design and support with very good technical advice for all three of the shipping containers supplied. The whole process was handled professionally and competently throughout and we now have three containers in place as per the design drawing and exactly for the purpose required,” he said.
Our team of specialist design engineers can convert containers into highly sophisticated containerised solutions for equipment and processes worldwide - for test facilities, power generation, solar farm electrical enclosures, restuarant complexes, water pumps, fire suppression, housing, and a host of other applications.

We were recently approached by a company who provide boutique camping accommodation at some of the UK's favourite music festivals. Their requirement was for a space that could serve as a flexible transport container as well as a public facing customer reception.
Katt, Project Manager at Pitch Village commented, 'S Jones were fantastic, helping us design a bespoke unit full of features such as power sockets, lighting and anti-condensation treatment - as well as more bespoke elements such as welcoming bi-folding doors, and an integrated shelving system. We are delighted with our S Jones container and look forward to working with them in the future.'
