Wahaca Southbank experiment: Shipping Container Pop-up Restaurant

Wahaca is a chain of restaurants based in London which boast innovative structure, quirky décor and exotic menus focusing on Mexican street foods. The first restaurant opened in the West End in 2007, since then further restaurants have opened in other areas of London.

For the ‘Southbank Experiment’ Wahaca wanted a “pop-up” restaurant structure that could progress quickly from concept to completion in time for the Golden Jubilee and 2012 London Olympics, so Wahaca’s agents approached S Jones to assist with the container technical design and carry out the subsequent modification. The high profile Southbank location was ideal for the striking design envisaged by the architect – to fit the containers together on 2 storeys providing dining space for up to 130 people and a daring cantilevered hanging bar space.

Once modified the containers were positioned and connected to create a series of interlinked open spaces including panoramic windows offering stunning views over the Thames from an elevated position on the Southbank.

The versatility of Shipping Containers

Shipping containers are the ideal building blocks for smart structures of practically every variety.  They are portable, durable and stackable.  They can be used to form exterior walls and integrated into other types of building materials. With restricted budgets and time frames many commercial and retail organisations are turning to the relatively simple, low cost and fast turnaround capability offered by modified shipping containers.
