At S Jones Containers, we are proud to be a family-run business based in Aldridge, near Birmingham, with more than a century of innovation, customer care, and industry leadership.
From humble beginnings in 1914 to becoming one of the UK’s most trusted names in shipping container sales, hire, and conversions, our story is one of continual progress and dedication to exceeding customer expectations.
Our story begins in 1914 when founder Samuel “Sammy” Jones became a haulage contractor in Aldridge, just north of Birmingham.
His very first consignment – cases of crockery, transported by horse and cart from Aldridge railway station to the local Manor House – set the wheels in motion for over a century of trusted service.
By the 1920s, Sammy had swapped the horse and cart for his first motor lorry, and by the 1930s, a growing fleet of vehicles was carrying goods throughout the Midlands.
This early focus on reliability and service laid the foundations for the container business we’re known for today.
In 1936, Edward Jones took over the family business, forming S Jones (Aldridge) Ltd. Over the next 25 years, the fleet of tipper lorries grew significantly, and the company diversified into general haulage – moving operations to our long-standing base on Anglian Road, Aldridge.
Edward’s son, Michael, joined in 1962, steering the company into new directions. S Jones became a main distributor for ERF Trucks and operated the first HGV driver training school in the country – a sign of the innovation that would continue for decades.
By the 1970s, the UK container revolution had begun.
Our haulage business evolved into shipping container transport, storage, and maintenance, and we became one of the largest container depots in the Midlands, handling thousands of units every year.
During this period, we also ran freight forwarding and bulk tanker services across Europe.
In 1976, S Jones Containers opened a container depot in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which successfully operated for 22 years before being sold in 1998. This expansion reflected the family’s ambition and gave Andrew Jones his first role within the business.
By the 1990s, S Jones consolidated around our Aldridge depot, focusing exclusively on container services. In 1999, Andrew Jones was appointed a Director, signalling a new era for the family business.
Since 2000, we have become one of the UK’s leading names in container sales, hire, and conversions.
