A bespoke shipping container café transforming Battersea Studios in London
S Jones Containers partnered with London architects Barr Gazetas to create a unique pop-up café at Battersea Studios. Using converted shipping containers, the project delivered a stylish, space-saving hospitality and retail solution that complements the site’s creative, industrial character.
Battersea Studios, located on Silverthorne Road, London, is home to some of the UK’s most creative businesses. To maximise the site’s potential, its owners wanted to relocate the existing café and free up indoor commercial space for rental opportunities.
They appointed Barr Gazetas, a leading architecture firm known for innovative design, who collaborated with S Jones Containers to bring their container café concept to life.
The main objective was to relocate the café into an external modular structure, allowing the original internal space to be redeveloped and rented out. The new café needed to be eye-catching, durable, and efficient, reflecting the vibrant, industrial style of Battersea Studios while performing as a functional retail and hospitality space.
S Jones Containers supplied two modified shipping containers to form the structure of the new pop-up café. The design included access stairs, a mezzanine platform, and a roof structure topped with a bold letter ‘B’ sign.
The 1,400kg sign was fabricated from 20mm thick laser-cut Corten steel sections and mounted on a complex support structure. When illuminated at night, its three-dimensional design creates a striking visual landmark.
Barr Gazetas’ use of Corten steel for both the sign and stair cladding, combined with the container’s corrugated profile, created a distinctive industrial look. The same weathering steel is used for the Angel of the North, offering corrosion resistance and a rich, patinated finish that complements the containers perfectly.
The completed container café is both functional and visually impressive, transforming underused outdoor space into a vibrant hospitality and retail hub while unlocking new commercial potential for Battersea Studios.
