Creating a Mental Health Sanctuary with Bespoke Modular Units

Delivering a purpose-built modular community space to support men’s mental health in Blackpool

When Blackpool-based charity Empowerment set out to create a dedicated space for men struggling with mental health, they partnered with S Jones Containers to design and build a bespoke modular sanctuary. The result – Elliot’s Place – is a welcoming and functional modular building that provides vital support to the local community.

The Customer

Empowerment is an innovative charity based in Blackpool that helps people have their voices heard and access vital support services. With a long-term commitment to improving lives and strengthening the local community, Empowerment provides inclusive, compassionate care for individuals from all backgrounds.

Following the tragic death of Elliot Taylor, who died by suicide in 2020, the charity was approached by Elliot’s family and friends. Together, they wanted to create a lasting legacy in his name, a safe, supportive environment for young men to discuss their struggles and receive immediate mental health support. This shared vision became Elliot’s Place.

Elliot’s Place signage mounted on a modular building, showing a hanging sign with a green circular logo and white text fixed to the exterior of a modular health sanctuary.

The Challenge

Empowerment needed a bespoke modular building that could act as a mental health sanctuary for young men in Blackpool. The space had to be comfortable, private, and adaptable for both one-to-one and group support sessions.

As a community-funded project, the charity also required a cost-effective and sustainable modular solution that could be delivered quickly without compromising quality or safety. The design had to reflect the sensitivity of its purpose – creating an inviting environment that promotes wellbeing, trust, and openness.

What Empowerment Had To Say

“It’s fantastic to see the final structure in place, ready to welcome the young men who really need the mental health support services from us.

We’re so pleased we have created a sanctuary where we can remember Elliot and celebrate his life, and also a safe place for other young men to share their troubles and alleviate any mental health struggles.”
