We collaborated with F1 in Schools to design a self-contained, containerised workshop that delivers hands-on STEM education in a fully portable format.
The converted 40ft container was engineered to house specialist teaching equipment and high-performance HVAC systems, enabling safe, comfortable use in challenging environments. This project demonstrates how container conversions can support innovative educational programmes by providing flexible, transportable learning spaces for students worldwide.
F1 in Schools was launched in 2001 as a Design & Technology Project to address the Four Key Concepts of Design and Technology as a subject: Creativity, Designing, Making and Critical Evaluation, and now 16 years later, F1 in Schools is acknowledged as the world’s largest STEM based educational competition.
The Teaching & Learning experience covers CAD/CAM, 3D Scanning, CNC Routing, Milling and Turning, as well as laser cutting and engraving and 3D printing. Pupils can design and make F1 model racing cars that can be tested on a racetrack against models constructed by other student teams.
Teachers also have the opportunity to design and deliver bespoke Design and Technology, and Engineering related courses that offer pupils the opportunity to experience something new, from manufacturing to working with modern CNC equipment to computer based design tasks. The activities help to enhance a pupil’s knowledge and give them experience of the skills and processes they will encounter during studies in class and in the world of work.
Specifying and sourcing hi-ambient HVAC suitable for use in the Middle East / desert regions and getting it all to fit alongside the emergency exit in the service lobby was the main challenge.
Our design engineers worked with the customer to design and manufacture the prototype product, an internationally shippable self-contained school workshop, which will allow students to develop their interest in STEM subjects.
Designed and engineered by S Jones Conversions, the bespoke 40ft container workshop was developed as a fully self-contained, internationally shippable learning space. Working closely with the customer, we modified the container to include a dedicated entrance doorway, fully lined interior, integrated electrics, and specialist flooring suited to technical training environments.
A high-performance HVAC system was installed to maintain safe, comfortable working conditions in high-ambient and desert climates, ensuring reliable operation worldwide. Once fabrication was complete, the unit was repainted and branded to the customer’s specification, ready for machine tools and desks to be installed to complete the mobile STEM workshop.
