Helping Colas UK Keep Our Roads Moving

When Colas UK needed a practical way to store Instarmac for its highway maintenance operations in Birmingham, it turned to S Jones Containers for a bespoke storage solution. Four modified shipping containers were supplied, providing secure, temperature-controlled storage for the material and helping to ensure it remained ready for use when needed.

The Customer

Colas UK is a leading infrastructure contractor responsible for maintaining and improving key elements of the UK’s national infrastructure, including major highways and road networks.

As part of its highway maintenance operations, the company uses Instarmac, a specialist material designed to quickly and effectively repair potholes on national highways, helping to keep roads safe and operational.

The Challenge

While Instarmac is highly effective for road repairs, it must be stored within a suitable temperature range to remain usable. Exposure to colder conditions can render the product unusable, resulting in unnecessary waste.

Colas UK required a storage solution that would protect the material from the elements while providing secure and convenient access for maintenance teams. The project also involved delivering the containers to a restricted location beneath a motorway flyover, creating an additional logistical challenge.

A Bespoke Solution

Following discussions with the Colas UK team, four shipping containers were modified to meet the project’s storage requirements.

The modifications included louvres, full side access personnel doors to improve organisation and storage efficiency, repainting the containers in dark blue, and the installation of electrics with heaters to help maintain suitable storage conditions for Instarmac.

Once complete, the containers were delivered and positioned beneath the motorway flyover. Careful coordination between our team and haulage partners ensured the installation was completed within the required timescales despite the challenging site conditions.
