Housing Cummins’ Energy Regeneration Processes In Bespoke Containers

When Cummins required a secure housing solution for a new energy regeneration system, we designed and delivered a bespoke container conversion capable of accommodating the specialist electrical equipment involved.

The project centred around two modified 40ft high cube shipping containers configured in a stacked arrangement, creating a compact and practical enclosure for equipment designed to recover energy generated during diesel engine testing.

The Customer

Cummins is a global engineering company with a long history in power generation, engines and energy technologies. As part of its ongoing work to improve energy efficiency across its operations, the company developed a system designed to recover electricity generated during diesel engine testing and feed it back into the national grid.

The project formed part of a wider initiative to make better use of energy that would otherwise be lost during testing processes.

The Challenge

Cummins required a containerised structure capable of housing the equipment needed to support its energy regeneration system at a UK facility.

The solution needed to accommodate a range of electrical infrastructure within a relatively compact footprint while also providing an environment suitable for the safe operation of the equipment. The project called for a practical design that could bring multiple systems together within a single containerised installation.

What Cummins Had to Say

“S Jones were adaptive and flexible throughout the engineering phase, especially considering the effects of Covid-19 and the lockdown at the time. Their designers were engaging and contributed creative ideas to help us achieve this challenging project.”
