Sketty Foodbank, an independent charity based in Swansea, needed additional storage as demand for its emergency food parcels continued to grow. S Jones Containers supplied a modified 20ft shipping container, providing a secure, organised space for food storage and helping the charity manage increasing stock levels more efficiently.
Sketty Foodbank was established in November 2021 after the previous local foodbank closed. Since then, it has supported more than 5,000 people across Swansea with emergency food supplies.
Initially, around 120 people visited the foodbank each month. As demand increased during the cost of living crisis, that number grew to more than 500 people per month, placing increasing pressure on both storage capacity and stock management.
With limited space available, volunteers had even begun storing food in their own garages, highlighting the need for a dedicated long-term storage solution.
As demand for emergency food parcels continued to increase, Sketty Foodbank needed additional storage capacity to support its day-to-day operations.
After receiving funding from The National Lottery, the charity began looking for a permanent storage solution and identified a shipping container as the most practical option.
The remaining challenge was delivery. The church where the foodbank operates had offered space within its car park, but the team needed reassurance that a container could be delivered and positioned safely within the available area.
Following discussions with several suppliers, Sketty Foodbank chose to work with S Jones Containers because of the support provided throughout the enquiry process.
Working closely with the charity, our sales team recommended a 20ft dark green shipping container fitted with our Contain-a-Lock® Padlock Protector & Lock. The container was also timber lined internally to help reduce condensation and protect the food stored inside.
Before delivery, aerial maps of the site were produced to assess access and determine the most suitable delivery vehicle. This allowed the container to be positioned exactly where the foodbank required it, ensuring a straightforward installation and providing the charity with a dedicated, secure storage facility for its food supplies.
