Container Moisture Traps for Condensation Control in Shipping Containers

Protect your goods in storage with our container moisture traps, designed to stop condensation, damp, and mould from damaging your belongings.

Whether you’re storing household items, business stock, or machinery, our moisture traps provide a simple, effective way to keep your shipping container dry.

Why You Need Container Moisture Traps

Shipping containers are secure and weatherproof, but temperature changes can cause container condensation.

This leads to damp patches, mould growth, and long-term deterioration of packaging, fabrics, and equipment. By placing moisture traps inside your container, you can:

  • Prevent damp and fungal growth
  • Reduce unpleasant odours
  • Protect perishable or moisture-sensitive items
  • Keep stored goods in excellent condition

Long-Term Alternatives to Moisture Traps – Grafo Therm, Lining & Insulation

While we don’t supply moisture traps, we’re happy to advise on the best option for your container and storage needs.

We do supply container lining and insulation, as well as Grafo-Therm treatment, all of which can be added when you purchase a container from us. Simply speak with our sales team to discuss your requirements.

Insulation and Internal Lining

For long-term protection against shipping container condensation, container lining and insulation provide a permanent, high-performance solution. Unlike moisture traps, they create a continuous barrier that reduces dampness and humidity while improving comfort inside the container.

Grafo Therm Anti-Condensation Coating

Grafo Therm anti-condensation coating is another effective option, applied to the interior roof to absorb moisture and prevent dripping onto stored goods. It is a durable and cost-effective treatment ideal for storage containers exposed to temperature changes.

FAQs

How do moisture traps work in a shipping container?

Moisture traps work by absorbing excess moisture from the air before it can form condensation on the cold steel walls of a container. As temperature changes cause humidity to rise, the crystals inside the trap draw in water vapour and lock it away as liquid. This helps prevent damp patches, mould growth and musty odours, keeping stored items dry and protected without any installation or maintenance.

How many moisture traps do I need for a 20ft or 40ft shipping container?

As a general guide, a 20ft container typically requires 2 – 4 moisture traps, while a 40ft container may need 4 – 6, depending on the product type, storage duration and how often the container is accessed. Using multiple traps ensures even moisture control throughout the space. Our team can recommend the right quantity based on what you’re storing and for how long.

Will moisture traps stop condensation completely inside my container?

Moisture traps significantly reduce condensation, but they may not eliminate it entirely -especially in containers exposed to large temperature swings or long-term closed storage. They are ideal for general storage use and short-to-medium-term protection, but for full, long-lasting condensation control, you may need solutions such as Grafo Therm, lining or insulation.

Do moisture traps work in winter or extreme temperature changes?

Yes. Moisture traps are effective year-round, including winter, when temperature fluctuations make condensation more likely. They continue absorbing moisture even in cold conditions, helping to reduce dampness and protect sensitive items. However, in environments with severe or continuous temperature changes, additional condensation-control methods may be beneficial.

When should I choose insulation or lining instead of moisture traps?

Insulation or lining is recommended when you need long-term or high-performance moisture control, or when the container will be used as a workspace, workshop or conversion. Unlike moisture traps, insulation and lining create a continuous barrier that stabilises temperature and reduces moisture at the source. They are the better choice for containers that remain closed for long periods, contain valuable items, or require improved comfort and durability.
