Fire Safety Event 2026 delivered strong footfall and meaningful conversations. Held at the NEC Birmingham from 28th– 30th April, the show welcomed more than 13,500 attendees and over 300 exhibitors.

Visitors explored the latest technologies, attended CPD-accredited seminars led by industry experts and discovered more than 10,000 fire safety products and solutions. For our Conversions Division, the volume and quality of enquiries made it an extremely successful three days.

Andy Nicholls, Head of Conversions, and Oliver Smith, Technical Sales Engineer, represented S Jones Containers and our specialist Conversions Division. Their conversations with facilities managers, contractors, health and safety professionals and fire safety specialists also provided a useful view of the issues shaping the industry.

Lithium-ion Battery Safety

Our stand was positioned close to the Innovation Theatre, allowing us to listen as our stand neighbours, Firechief Global, took to the stage.

Senior Technical Consultant Matt Humby delivered an insightful presentation titled ‘Mitigating Lithium-Ion Battery Risks – Turning Fire Hazards into Safety Opportunities’. The session explored why lithium-ion battery fires occur, how thermal runaway develops and the steps organisations can take to prevent or contain an incident.

Compared with previous years, significantly more exhibitors were discussing lithium-ion battery risks. Visitors also had a much better understanding of the subject. Rather than asking only whether batteries could catch fire, people wanted to know how they should be charged, where they could be stored and what might limit the effects of a failure.

Lithium-ion battery safety is no longer a specialist concern. It is becoming an operational issue for organisations using rechargeable tools, equipment, vehicles and energy storage systems.

Safe Charging and Storage

Correctly manufactured and properly used batteries are generally safe, but damage, defects, overheating or unsuitable charging equipment can lead to failure and thermal runaway.

Batteries should be sourced from reputable suppliers, charged with the correct equipment and checked for damage, swelling or overheating. Ventilation, separation, charging arrangements and emergency procedures should be discussed from the outset and reflected in the relevant fire risk assessment.

What to Do If a Battery Catches Fire

If a lithium-ion battery catches fire, people should never attempt to tackle it themselves. Once thermal runaway begins, conditions can deteriorate in seconds. The correct response is to evacuate, contact the fire and rescue service and avoid placing anyone at risk.

London Fire Brigade has similarly warned that thermal runaway can cause a rapid and ferocious fire capable of blocking escape routes.

Figures published shortly after the FSE reinforced the importance of these discussions. Research by QBE Insurance Group recorded 1,760 lithium-ion battery fires in the UK during 2025. That equates to approximately one incident every five hours and represents an increase of 147% in three years.

Changing Fire Safety Regulations

Every content session at the Fire Safety Event was accredited for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), enabling attendees to record their learning as part of their professional development. This was particularly relevant because professional competence, personal accountability, fire risk assessments and the evidence supporting safety decisions are under growing scrutiny across the wider fire safety industry and were key themes throughout the event’s seminars.

The Residential Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans Regulations came into force on 6th April 2026, only weeks before the exhibition. They introduced new duties intended to support residents who may need help evacuating certain residential buildings, making evacuation planning a timely subject within the Fire Safety Leaders Summit.

The Government was also consulting on revisions to Approved Document B (fire safety guidance), including proposed changes relating to external walls and evacuation lifts. For duty holders and building managers, fire strategies must be kept under review as regulations, buildings and operating conditions change.

Passive Fire Protection

Fire doors, intumescent seals, ironmongery, firestopping, correct testing and third-party certification were highly visible across the exhibition.

These measures restrict the spread of fire and smoke, protect escape routes and give occupants more time to leave safely. Their effectiveness depends on correct specification, installation and maintenance, with every component considered as part of the complete system.

The publication of BS 8214:2026 shortly before the event made the focus on fire doors especially relevant. The revised standard covers the design, specification, installation and maintenance of fire-resisting and smoke-control doors.

Skills and Diversity

The industry continues to face an ageing workforce, rising regulatory expectations and difficulties attracting new talent. Sessions on apprenticeships, entry routes and training barriers recognised the importance of passing technical knowledge to the next generation.

It was also encouraging to see Women Talking Fire once again supporting greater diversity and representation across the sector.

VR Fire Safety Demonstrations

The increased use of virtual reality was another noticeable trend at this year’s event.

We introduced a VR experience that allowed visitors to explore our bespoke container conversions. As transporting every type of converted container to an exhibition isn’t practical, VR allowed visitors to step inside our different containerised enclosures and see how each space can be designed and used.

Other exhibitors used immersive technology to demonstrate equipment and recreate fire scenarios. These tools are particularly valuable when products are too large to exhibit or designed for conditions that cannot safely be replicated on a stand.

Our Lithium-Ion Battery Storage and Charging Solutions

We showcased compressor enclosures, switchgear rooms and boiler rooms, with a particular focus on our lithium-ion battery storage and charging containers.

Our range comprises four solution tiers: Gold, Silver, Bronze and Green. Each tier is designed to suit different levels of risk identified through a Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) assessment, allowing the specification to be matched to the battery type and application. For example, Green battery store is suited to lower-risk scenarios, while Gold provides a higher level of protection for higher-risk battery types or R&D environments.

Depending on the specification, containers can be fitted with ATEX-rated equipment and provide a minimum 60-minute fire resistance rating, with options to increase this to 120 or 240 minutes where the application requires additional protection. This flexibility allows businesses to select a solution that reflects their specific operational, fire safety and storage requirements.

Visitors asked informed questions about ventilation, safe storage, charging batteries away from buildings, insurance and access to equipment. Their enquiries reflected the wider improvement in lithium-ion battery awareness that we saw across the show.
