April 2025 will be remembered as a landmark month in the history of S Jones Containers. Not only did we make our debut at the Fire Safety Event with a packed panel discussion on battery safety, but on the very same day we proudly took home our first-ever industry trophy: the Manufacturing Innovation Award 2025 at Insider Media’s Made in the Midlands Awards.

This achievement represents more than just an award ceremony success. It is recognition of the technical expertise, engineering capability, and innovation our Conversions Division delivers in creating bespoke containerised solutions for some of the most complex challenges faced by industries today.

Celebrating Manufacturing Excellence in the Midlands

The Made in the Midlands Awards are among the most respected celebrations of manufacturing in the region. Organised by Insider Media, the event showcases pioneering projects and businesses that demonstrate the very best in creativity, engineering, and problem-solving.

The Midlands is the beating heart of UK manufacturing, with a legacy built on engineering excellence. Today, it continues to lead in fields such as electrification, sustainable energy, and advanced modular engineering. Winning an award here is a statement: your business is at the forefront of shaping the future.

For S Jones Containers, being shortlisted in not one but two categories – Manufacturing Innovation Award and Manufacturer of the Year – was already a major achievement. Taking home the trophy for Innovation on our very first attendance made it even more special.

From the Fire Safety Event to Awards Night

The day began with our debut at the Fire Safety Event at the NEC. Over three days, we showcased specialist battery storage and testing container solutions and hosted a headline panel discussion titled “Electric Revolution, Safety Evolution: Prioritising Battery Regulations.”

The session attracted a full audience and generated engaging debate around lithium-ion battery safety, storage standards, and the urgent need for industry-wide clarity. It was clear that our approach – designing containerised environments with fire resistance, explosion venting, monitoring systems, and environmental containment built in – resonated with a sector facing growing safety demands.

That evening, attention turned from the exhibition floor to the awards stage. Our Conversions team swapped uniforms for black tie and assembled at Birmingham’s Macdonald Burlington Hotel, ready to celebrate with fellow finalists across 11 award categories.

The Team Behind the Achievement

Representing S Jones on the night were ten colleagues from across the Conversions Division, Operations, Marketing, and senior leadership, including Head of Conversions Andy Nicholls, Head of Operations Sarah Green, Head of Marketing Aine Girn, and our MD Andrew Jones.

We were also joined by two valued partners:

  • Dr Simon Jones, Warwick Manufacturing Group, who earlier contributed his expertise to our Fire Safety Event panel on battery safety.
  • Russell Woods, Brac Engineers, a trusted HVAC supplier supporting many of our container conversion projects.

Networking at the pre-dinner drinks reception, reconnecting with finalists, and then sitting down for the ceremony created a real sense of excitement. For a first-time appearance, the atmosphere was electric.

The Moment of Recognition

As awards were revealed across the categories, the anticipation built. When the Manufacturing Innovation Award winner was announced, it was S Jones Containers who took to the stage.

The judges praised the pioneering work of our Conversions Division in designing and delivering specialist shipping container conversions, including:

  • Facilities for abuse testing lithium-ion batteries with fire and explosion safety measures engineered into the design.
  • Units capable of supporting the safe removal of missile warheads in defence projects.
  • Modular laboratories and plant rooms built for performance in critical environments.

The trophy, our first in company history, represents not only innovation but the trust placed in us by industries where safety, compliance, and reliability cannot be compromised.

What Innovation Looks Like in Container Conversions

Innovation at S Jones is not theoretical. It is practical, applied engineering that solves real problems. Our Conversions Division specialises in adapting shipping containers into facilities where risk control, compliance, and durability are non-negotiable.

In battery testing, for example, challenges include thermal runaway, gas release, and over-pressure events. Our solutions integrate monitoring systems, early detection, fire resistance, explosion venting, and environmental containment into a single engineered unit.

In defence projects, containers must withstand structural stress while accommodating highly sensitive operations. Our engineers translate complex requirements into buildable designs, ensuring safety and repeatability in fabrication.

In R&D and modular laboratories, flexibility and compliance go hand in hand, allowing clients to carry out specialist testing and research in controlled, transportable environments.

The Manufacturing Innovation Award recognises these capabilities, rewarding innovation that makes a measurable impact for customers.

Voices from the Team

Head of Conversions, Andy Nicholls, captured the pride of the moment:

“When they called our name, it was one of the best moments in my career. It showed how far the company has come over the last 10 years and felt like the start of an exciting new chapter. Roll on the nationals!”

The award reflects not just a single year of projects, but a decade of continuous improvement in engineering and delivery standards.

Looking Ahead: Made in the UK Awards 2025

Our regional victory now takes us to the national stage. As winners of the Manufacturing Innovation Award 2025, we qualify for the Made in the UK Awards, held on 19th June at Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel.

Here, we will compete against regional champions from across the country, representing the Midlands’ proud tradition of innovation. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate how container engineering is helping industries meet challenges around sustainability, safety, and resilience.

What This Means for Customers

For our customers, this award is not just recognition for us – it’s reassurance for you. Choosing S Jones means:

  • Working with an award-winning conversions team.
  • Confidence in solutions built for compliance and safety.
  • Access to specialist knowledge in areas like battery storage, laboratories, and plant enclosures.
  • A partner with a proven track record of turning complex requirements into reliable outcomes.

This recognition affirms that our container conversions are trusted by industries that cannot afford failure – from energy and utilities to defence and R&D.

Continuing the Journey of Innovation

Winning the Manufacturing Innovation Award is a milestone, but it is also a motivator. Our responsibility is to build on this achievement, applying the same discipline and ingenuity to every new project. Whether it’s refining battery storage designs, advancing monitoring systems, or creating modular spaces that redefine flexibility, our mission remains the same: deliver containers that work harder, safer, and smarter.
