General Questions

What is the difference between new and used shipping containers?

A new shipping container, often called a “single-trip” container, is built overseas and transported to the UK carrying cargo before being sold in almost-new condition. These containers have only made one journey, so they are durable and visually smart, making them the preferred choice for projects where appearance and lifespan are important. These containers can be converted into offices, workshops, retail containers or long-term secure storage

A used shipping container (or second-hand container) has usually spent several years in global shipping before being retired from service. In the UK, most are graded A1, meaning they are wind and watertight with fully operational doors and seals. While they may show cosmetic wear such as dents or fading, they remain structurally sound and secure, offering a cost-effective solution for general storage of equipment, tools or stock. The decision between new and used usually depends on budget, the intended use and whether presentation matters.

Can shipping containers be stacked?

Yes, shipping containers are designed for safe stacking, which is one of their major advantages for storage and site use. The structural strength of a container is concentrated in its four corner posts, allowing weight to be transferred safely when one container is placed on top of another. In shipping ports, containers are stacked several containers high, and the same principle applies when they are used on land in the UK.

To ensure safety and compliance with regulations, interlocking twist locks are used to connect the containers securely at the corners and prevent movement. Ground conditions also need to be stable and capable of bearing the combined weight. On construction sites, storage yards and industrial facilities, containers are often stacked two or three high to maximise capacity without taking up extra ground space. Stacking provides flexibility, allowing businesses to expand storage efficiently while maintaining a compact footprint.

How many pallets fit in a shipping container?

The number of pallets that can be stored inside a shipping container depends on both the size of the container and the type of pallet. A standard 20ft container will usually hold around 10 UK standard pallets placed on the floor, while a 40ft container typically holds around 20. If Euro pallets are used, the layout may differ because of their slightly narrower size, which sometimes allows for more efficient arrangements.

The way pallets are positioned inside the container also affects the total number, and in some cases, goods may be stacked vertically if the palletised items are suitable and the internal height of the container allows. Careful planning is important for businesses using containers for warehousing, logistics or retail storage because maximising pallet capacity reduces costs and improves efficiency. Checking the internal dimensions of the container against pallet sizes ensures the space is used effectively and safely.

How much does a shipping container cost in the UK?

The cost of a shipping container in the UK is influenced by its size, condition, any modifications and the delivery location. A 20ft container generally costs less than a 40ft container, while specialist designs such as high cube or side opening containers are more expensive. Condition also plays a key role. New single-trip containers are priced higher because they offer longer lifespan and a clean, smart appearance, making them ideal for conversion projects and high-quality storage.

Used containers are more affordable and remain wind and watertight, making them a practical option for everyday storage of goods and equipment. Modifications such as lock boxes, insulation or shelving will increase the price, as will transport to the final site, which requires specialist haulage. Because container prices fluctuate with global demand and delivery costs, most suppliers provide tailored quotations, ensuring buyers receive the most accurate and competitive price for their requirements.

Delivery

Can you lift containers over obstructions?

Yes, containers can be lifted over fences, walls or other low obstructions using a contract lift with a specialised crane. Before delivery, a site-specific risk assessment is carried out to confirm the correct crane size and ensure safe lifting.

Can a storage container be placed on any surface?

No, containers must be placed on level, hard-standing ground. Suitable surfaces include concrete, paving slabs, compacted stone or railway sleepers. The four bottom corners must be properly supported so that the container remains level and the doors open smoothly.

Can you offload from the rear of the vehicle?

Rear offloading can be arranged if required, although it may carry an additional charge depending on access and site conditions.

Where can modular buildings be delivered and off-loaded?

Our modular buildings are delivered nationwide. Using trusted transport services and crane operators, we can position your prefabricated unit exactly where you need it. Our project management team provides full technical support and can also assist with relocation and collection.

How big is the vehicle delivering my container?

Delivery vehicles are usually around 52ft long. Clear access is essential to ensure your container can be transported and offloaded safely.

How much space is needed to park and offload a container?

You will need a width of approximately 24ft on site to allow the delivery vehicle to park and offload your container safely.

What space restrictions apply to container delivery?

Containers are normally delivered by lorries with built-in cranes. At least 20ft of clear access width is required, and a single 20ft container will need over 25ft of length for safe offloading. A 30ft or 40ft container requires more than 45ft. There must be no overhead restrictions, such as cables or tree branches below 25ft high. The vehicle must be able to drive from the public highway to the offloading point across solid ground without restrictions such as drains. In some cases, it is possible to offload over a low wall or hedge, but this must be agreed with us before delivery.

Will your storage containers be large enough for my goods?

Yes, containers are available in 8ft, 10ft, 20ft, 30ft and 40ft sizes. You can view the full internal dimensions, cubic capacities and door openings on our container dimensions page to make sure you select the right unit for your storage needs.

Specifications

Do steel shipping containers have condensation problems?

Condensation can sometimes occur in shipping containers due to changes in temperature, humidity, or the type of goods stored. Most containers come with built-in ventilation, which is usually sufficient, but we also offer extra protection. Options include anti-condensation roof coatings, moisture control products such as traps and drying crystals, or a full internal lining. These solutions help protect valuable items and make containers suitable for long-term storage in the British climate.

Can I choose a specific colour for my container?

Yes, you can choose almost any colour. Our stock of new and used containers comes in a range of standard shades, but if your preferred option is unavailable, we provide a professional spray-painting service. Containers can be finished in any RAL or BS colour, and unless specified otherwise, we use a high-performance marine paint system designed to withstand the elements and ensure a durable, long-lasting finish.

Are shipping containers fireproof?

Shipping containers are not completely fireproof. However, because they are manufactured from heavy-duty steel panels with marine-grade plywood flooring, they are very resistant to fire compared to most other storage options. It is important to note that under extreme heat, any material can eventually burn, but containers offer a far stronger level of protection than standard timber or modular storage buildings.

How long does a shipping container last?

The service life of a shipping container depends on its condition, location, and level of maintenance. A used shipping container will typically have spent more than 10 years in international shipping before resale, but with proper care, it can deliver a further decade or more of reliable storage. A new container, sometimes referred to as “one trip,” can last over 30 years when maintained correctly. This durability makes containers one of the most cost-effective and secure storage solutions available in the UK.

What materials are shipping containers made from?

Shipping containers are built from Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, which is designed for strength and corrosion resistance. The flooring is constructed from marine-grade plywood, a heavy-duty timber designed to withstand years of wear while supporting heavy loads. This robust combination of materials makes containers exceptionally durable and secure for both shipping and static storage.

Miscellaneous

Do I need planning permission for a shipping container home?

In most cases, shipping containers used for storage or as temporary structures do not require planning permission. However, when converting a shipping container into a home, office, or other permanent use, local planning rules may apply. To avoid delays, we recommend checking with your local authority. We can also supply green-painted containers to help them blend into countryside or rural environments, ensuring your project is both practical and compliant.

Can you supply an ISO container?

Yes, we supply ISO containers for sale and hire in 10ft, 20ft, 30ft and 40ft sizes. We stock both new and used ISO containers at competitive prices and provide a full range of accessories and modification services. For short-term requirements, our container hire service is the most cost-effective option.

Can you supply sea containers?

We supply sea containers for sale, hire, and storage in sizes from 10ft to 40ft. Available in both new and used condition. These containers are ideal for shipping, on-site storage, or as a base for container conversions.

What is the difference between cargo, freight, and ISO containers?

There is no practical difference between these terms. Cargo containers, freight containers and ISO containers all describe the same type of standardised shipping container built to ISO specifications. These standards guarantee that containers are strong, secure, and weatherproof, capable of transporting goods by sea, rail, and road worldwide.

What is a sea container?

A sea container, also known as a shipping or freight container, is a standardised steel container used for transporting goods by ship, rail, or truck. Sizes typically range from 10ft to 40ft, and all genuine sea containers must meet ISO specifications. To be used for international shipping, the container must carry a valid CSC plate (Convention for Safe Containers certification). While we personally do not ship abroad, we are CSC certified, and we can put you in touch with international shipping agents who can arrange this for you.

What are freight shipping containers?

Freight shipping containers are another term for ISO containers. They are rectangular steel units designed to carry goods securely by sea, road, and rail. Built to strict ISO standards, freight containers are designed to fit perfectly into ship holds and intermodal transport systems, ensuring safe and efficient handling throughout their lifespan.

Do you offer site storage?

We provide containers for site storage on construction, commercial, and industrial sites across Great Britain. Containers are available for sale or hire and can be delivered directly to your site for immediate use. We also operate self storage facilities in Aldridge, Coventry, and West Bromwich in the West Midlands, offering secure and flexible storage solutions for personal and business customers.
