The Customer
Sketty Foodbank, based in Swansea, started in November 2021 after the previous local foodbank closed down, and the team soon realised that there was a great need for their services.
They are a real lifeline for many people in their local community, and have an amazing team of volunteers who make their work possible. At first, about 120 people visited the foodbank each month. But as the cost of living crisis has worsened, this number has skyrocketed to over 500 people per month visiting the bank for emergency food parcels.
The team at Sketty Foodbank is doing an amazing job to help their community, but the increasing demand for food is putting a strain on their resources.
One of the biggest challenges is storage and stock management. Some volunteers have even had to store food in their garages at home, which is not ideal.
Sketty Foodbank is a small, independent charity that has helped over 5,000 people in Swansea with emergency food supplies since 2021.
S Jones Containers has recently supported Sketty Foodbank, working with the charity to provide a shipping container that has been modified to provide safe and efficient stock storage.
The Challenge
With the number of people needing food parcels on the rise, Sketty Foodbank found themselves in a crisis situation – they needed more storage space!
Luckily, the foodbank was awarded a grant from the National Lottery which allowed them to start looking for a permanent solution. After weighing their options, Sketty Foodbank decided that a shipping container would be the best way to store their food.
One challenge that the foodbank faced was where to put the container once it arrived. The church where the foodbank is based had kindly offered up some of their car park space, but the group wasn’t sure how much room the delivery lorry would need or how it would position the container once it was on site.
After speaking to several container suppliers, Sketty Foodbank chose to work with S Jones Containers because of their sales team’s helpfulness and efficiency throughout the sales process.
The Solution
The S Jones Containers sales team worked closely with Sketty Foodbank to find the perfect container for their needs.
They chose a 20ft dark green container complete with S Jones’ Contain-a-Lock® Padlock Protector & Lock, which would blend in seamlessly with the site and deter vandals. The inside of the container was lined with timber to prevent condensation and protect the food from damage.
Before delivering the container, S Jones produced aerial maps of the delivery location to ensure that the right size lorry would be used. This resulted in a smooth and efficient delivery, with the container placed exactly where the foodbank team wanted it.
S Jones Containers went above and beyond to help Sketty Foodbank. They understood the importance of the foodbank’s work and were committed to providing them with the best possible solution. Thanks to S Jones Containers, Sketty Foodbank now has a safe and efficient place to store their food, so they can continue to help those in need.
What Sketty Foodbank had to say
“The container has been a priceless support to foodbank. No longer are we storing food stock in our garages at home but now all our stock is organised on shelving in the container which reduces our work load and increases our efficiency, as well as having a better control of stock turn over. We are now an impressively organised foodbank meeting the demands of our community.
“S Jones were incredibly efficient. They also were very patient me as I had no previous experience of purchasing a container. Everyone I was in contact with at S Jones were very professional – I have already recommended the company to others. The container is a great asset to our food bank. Thank you, S Jones.”
